The Soldier and the Storyteller

My friends’ Scott and David have important jobs though they probably couldn’t be more different. Scott is a career national guardsman who serves as IT support for various equipment and has patrolled the streets of New Orleans during the aftermath of Katrina. David is a globe-trotting writer that tells the story of Bible translation in remote people groups in dense rainforests and tropical islands. Theres no doubt in my mind though that they’re both changing their world for the better.

When I think of many people who have never had the opportunity to question whether the God of the Bible is true for themselves… when I think of all the good that having a written language brings, I think of David who tells the stories that would otherwise be lost to time.

When I remember the chaos that was New Orleans after the hurricane… when I think of the general sense of comfort and safety that we have in Texas, I think of Scott who was willing to sacrifice his time to assure greater stability and safety.

My world would be a little less meaningful without both of them at work in the places they find themselves. So how is God at work in your life and the lives of people at your job? What is he doing in the place you spend most of your waking hours?

Don’t forget to join me in telling the world on February 20, the newly coined “Labor Day in February,” when we’ll remember that, like the presidents celebrated on that day, our 9-5 matters no matter what we do.

I’m shooting for the ambitious goal of having 10 people blog along with me about this very important topic as an encouragement to all those people who aren’t sure they’re “normal” or “secular” jobs matter.

If you’re a pastor or in career ministry like me, you might follow my lead and tell the story of friends who are doing something very important for their community or the world.
